Women, dark corners and societal prejudice

I write this for every girl who is not allowed to be herself, but cannot say anything without being slapped across her face. For a society which loves only to tut and tsk and pass judgments and make rules for every living being in it. For all the women whose life is controlled by her fear of being the next target to the public perverts.

Sakshi was the new intern in a company in Nahur. Every morning she reached Nahur station at 7 am. And every morning three men sat in wait for her to get down from the train. Lewd catcalls echoed the walls of the station- “Aye chamiya”, “Aye heroine”, but Sakshi walked on, trying her best to ignore the jibes and the crass demands of her lifting up her skirts for them.

“Stop wearing those short skirts to work”, her friends said.

Yes, easy. If you want to stop them passing dirty comments all you have to do is deck up in something that covers you from head to toe.
But wait, haven’t we seen men gawking at a woman in a saree too? I have seen perverts staring at eleven year old kids wearing shorts. But they aren’t at fault are they?

India is one such country where a man treats his own mother with a respect bordering on reverence but at the same time does not think before groping a girl’s butt in a local train. He runs for his pyari behena’s aid from anywhere in the world, but has no qualms about poking and pinching somebody else’s sister in a dark street.

And when something happens who is to blame? Of course the girl! How dare she wear such clothes? How dare she drink in a pub? How dare she walk alone in a dark street?

It’s sad. It’s just sad.

Women problems in India are not a new subject. We have had the age old dowry and female feoticide practically choking the country down since forever. Equality for women in India is a far-fetched topic in this country. Here the government only gives reservations and concessions to women. Like they are cripples and who are provided with crutches to walk on.

When will that world come where women are not automatically considered as the sex that is unable to fend for itself? When she does not need reserved compartments or seats or special offers to be considered worthy of something.
Yes, these are some dreams that many of us have. But in a country where its leaders themselves look down upon women, how can such dreams come true?
Women like Sakshi can be seen everywhere. Dodging perverts, turning deaf against their catcalls, trying to defend themselves when these men touch them. Most of them feel scared of venturing out on the streets after dark. And many, many, many women I know have stopped wearing what they like and doing what they do just to avoid the aforementioned catcalls.

Okay, enough said about the perverts of India. What about those people who walk on the streets with selective blindness? Many of them see women being touched inappropriately but still walk by silently, afraid of getting involved. Aren’t you human enough to go and help a person in distress, whoever you are, man or woman? The police may still refuse to help but there are a hundred ways to help a person out if you want to.

When will this saga end? Thousands of writers have written about this, hundreds of films have been made on this. But the perverts are still lurking around the corner. They just need a woman, fully clothed or not, they will ATTACK! And it’s not their fault. No, they aren’t responsible for their overflowing testosterone, why did you go into that dark street?

It’s high time this stops. Enough women have been inculpated for living their life the way they want. It’s high time these perverts stop watering at the mouths when they see a mere shadow of a breast. It’s high time women gain some respect. Next time something happens, just kick them in the balls girls! If it doesn’t stop by words alone it’s time for some blood spilling, pain giving action!

Football Fever

Two months back, if you would have said Balotelli, I would have thought it was the scientific name of a vicious bacteria species. If you would have said D Maria, I would have conjured up the image of a short, fat plumber rescuing a princess. If you would have mentioned football, it wouldn't have meant more than a ball and two goal posts to me.

But this last month has been a new experience as I started looking at football through the right end of the telescope.  The whole world had their adrenaline pumping as thrilling goals and unbelievable misses made their way to our hearts. The FIFA world cup 2014 has brought with it a fever. A viral fever, spreading like wildfire from Brazil to Malaysia, America to Columbia. And with the whole world rotating on the axis of FIFA, why would India be left behind?
Indians have always been crazy about football. Even though our country is not one of the participating teams, the viewership for this game has been more than that of hockey and tennis put together and is second only to cricket. Every morning, once in four years, when FIFA grips the nation, we see tired office goers discussing the previous night’s (or early morning’s) matches, their haggard eyes still alive with the zeal of the match. And this year again, the fever has caught on!

And why wouldn't it catch on? There have been some amazing moments in this tournament. Remember that goal Messi kicked in the Argentina vs. Iran match? Right in the 91st minute! And those six marvelous goals by Rodriguez this season, the biting Suarez who trended all over every social networking site, the spectacular saves by Tim Howard against Belgium (15 saves in a world cup match!). The crowds cheering madly, the players lashing out at the ball, the rush of victory when a goal is scored, everyone piling up on each other with fervent exuberance! And the tears of outrageous frustration when the goal is missed! It is palpable, and it is infectious.

But footballers are not only goals and scores, they are style and funk too! What’s with their obsession with crazy hair styles? Be it David Luiz’s curly mop or Balotelli’s thin Mohawk. These players are a gold mine for bizarre hairstyles.

And the bizarreness doesn't end here! Why do the participating teams have sex rules? It seems Russia, Bosnia, Chile and Mexico players aren't allowed to have sex in the entire tournament. No wonder they didn't make it to the semifinals. Their extreme testosterone levels must have made them forget how to kick a goal!

Anyway, FIFA 2014 is gripping the world in its clutches. Its peppy official song with Pitbull and JLo singing “Ole Ole Ola” with all their hearts slowly grows on you! The tournament has reached its climax with Brazil, Argentina, Netherlands and Germany battling out the semifinals. I can nearly hear the thud of excited heartbeats everywhere as fans wait with bated breath, putting their faith on their favourite teams.

And for me, a non-football fan, I am just a by stander crooning “Put your flags up in the sky” under my breath and hoping the best team wins!

Cheers! :)

Black World

A train journey to the sea shore
Waiting in the crowd to climb aboard
The train arrives with jerks and breaks
Full of evil and good face

He gets a two inch space and sits
Crouching, his knees between knees he fits
And with people breathing each other’s breath
Bearing each other’s sweat.
The train goes on at a fast pace
Twisting about in its track maze.

Then in climbs a little beggar girl
A baby in her arms holding on to her
She walks between the hordes of legs
Begging and gaining scornful detest.
At him she smiles a ravishing smile
And eyes him with an innocent eye.
The baby in her arms dreaming away
Oblivious, yet, to life’s pains

Suddenly, the girl falls down, tripping on a bag
Black inside and out, a black bag
She kicked it right beneath his seat
And he realized, he realized it…

But then too late, everything ceased
Everything suddenly ceased to be
As a thousand travellers were thrown away,
Thrown away from life on that day
Blood and flesh all around
But nobody left to see
As people were left to die and be found
In the middle of the city.

The baby never saw life
But isn’t he lucky?
He never lived in this black world
With black bags, black minds
And black hearts
Yes he is lucky…

The 2014 post

I had contemplated starting a blog for many years before I actually started it. I thought I wouldn’t be able to give it time. And I was right wasn’t I? Never have been righter.

This is my first 2014 post. And lo and behold (I love Enid Blyton :P), it’s June already! I guess it’s a little too late for a “Happy New Year” but all the same I hope you had a good one till now. The summer has gone by, the rains have blessed us and here I am posting for the first time this year.

So, here goes,
I had just finished reading ‘The Fault in Our Stars’ the other night. Good book. Sweet. But at the end of it, blinking away tears, I realized one thing. Life, that miracle we all are blessed with, is a delicate phenomenon. A small growth in our body can kill us. No a single missed heartbeat can put a full stop on our life.

And this little blessing we all have, what do we do with it? Sit in air conditioned rooms with our laptops and play games or facebook or tweet or in other words crumple our lives into a football and kick it all around! Or else sit in front of misted windows and dream about the perfect life, the perfect job or the perfect house.

But which one of us decides to move our arse to actually do something and change that dream into our ‘life’? No we are scared. We keep walking straight, fall in line with the people who have already paved a path. We are scared to take a bend in this road, fearing that the entire road will cave in and lead us to our doom.

But my dear people, life is short. Before you blink your eyes you are eighty and dead. Dead and buried with no war memorial in your name or no ‘The Fault in Our Stars’ written on you. You will be lost among the very many men. The men who lived and walked on the earth and died, never to be remembered again. And if you want to be remembered you’ve got to wield your sword (or pen or football or brain or whatever is your thing). Take that bend and let your dreams take control!

Dreaming is good for your body and for your mind but it’s best for your life. If you don’t feel a passion in what you do then just let it go. Even if it lets you buy a flat near Bandra Bandstand let it go. It’s better to live happy in a chawl in Dharavi than live depressed in a bungalow in Marine Lines. Build your life out of your dreams. This way you will atleast have your dream to live on for you after you die a happy death.

And yes I can actually hear many of you protesting that you are too old to take that turn in your life. But then, you get only one chance to live. And you have to live your fullest in this life. So, my fellow earthliens, I don’t believe for a single second that you are too old. If you are not dead then you are still young enough to build your dream. So build them. It’s the only chance you have.

Exasperated Love

Every house with two or more children has a continuous battle raging within it. These battles may have sprouted out from things as mundane as the TV remote or the temperature of the AC. Yet the battle goes on and on, until, saturated, a sweet silence follows. Nobody tries to make up for the fight but the siblings forget everything and sit together peacefully until the next battle is ensued.

Love is an emotion that can be expressed in many bizarre ways, perhaps the most bizarre being the love between siblings. Exasperated, yet entirely pure, this love is bitter-sweet and peppered heavily with tiffs. But, as we say, familiarity breeds contempt, and your sibling is the most familiar person in your life.

When my brother was born I had turned into a sulky cry baby. I couldn't bear him stealing away my spotlight. I made a rule that nobody could click pictures of him without me posing in it too. Of course nobody took me seriously and I ended up spending an entire Sunday screaming my head off and not talking to anyone.

As we grew up, I loved bullying him, pinching and pushing him. But we did have our happy moments of playing by the hour. I still remember how hard I used to try to make him smile even after fighting with him the whole day.
Today he is half a foot taller than I am and probably double my weight. Now he is the one who pushes me and pinches me. My father says its high time he took his revenge. We still fight, over the smallest things, That is one thing that wont change even when we are 80 years old perhaps.

Siblings are the closest people you will have in your life. You grow up with them, share more than genes with them, often go to school together and have only each other when you go to all those boring family functions. I'm sure most of you must have wished you were an only child. But trust me, the grass is always greener on the other side. Those who do not have siblings are often lamenting about it and wishing they had someone to share their childhood moments too.

Well I am truly glad I have a brother. I teach him all those identities and problems in Maths and he teaches me how to sing. Yes it is a regular exchange of knowledge here. There is also an equal outlet of exasperation and outbursts of retorts. But hey, it is all a part of this bizarre love. It's a sweet relationship, complete with bruises and scratches. But as life goes on, you will realize how much you enjoy it.
